Area 10 Selective Chinook rules on now Remains open Thru December and January
Good fishing at Kingston and Jefferson Head on Sunday with several boats getting limits. Hatchery fish only up to 10 lbs were reported from Kingston and Jefferson head. The best bite was on the outgoing tide and around the tide change at about 10Am till Noon. Coyote spoons behind a flasher were the top producers, with tomic plugs a close second and the plug produced the biggest fish. Fishing 115 to 150 feet deep close to bottom was the target area. There have been good reports from other locations in area 10 of good fishing, so seems this area is holding bait and fish.

Rex shows off one of the nice winter blackmouth
|
Saturday Morning and still stuffed with turkey from thanksgiving, I meet Pat Robichaux her husband Val, son Rex and his girlfriend Marissa on the P.O.E. dock at 0700, we fill out licenses, go thru a safety orientation and quickly depart. As we round Possession Point with not a ripple on our way to the outer bar the sun is rising with all its glory to reveal one of the most spectacular views in all of the world with Mount Baker glistening to the North, Mount Rainer gleaming in the sun to the south, the snow capped peaks of the cascades to the east and the Olympic mountains shining to the west. This has to be one of the views i never get tired of. We reach our destination; get the gear set to fish and almost instantly the fish start biting; we land a couple nice Blackmouth, release some and just enjoy the day with great people. Now this is the office I work in and lots of people wish they could trade with me.

Blackmouth fishing remains excellent
As the weather permits Possession Bar remains the spot to catch fish. November storms can make it difficult to get to Possession Bar and even tougher to fish it when the wind is blowing from the south at over 15 knots so sometimes you just have to wait till another day, but on the days when it has been fishable the catching remains excellent. The east side of the bar has been best on almost all tides with fish up to 13 lbs this past week. Best action this week has been on frog Racer or two tone green and white Coyote spoons or a 5 inch Tomic Plug fished close to the bottom right in the bait at 120 to 150 feet of water. As long as the bait remains in the area this should continue to produce through out the rest of the month.

Fishing or School?
|
Blackmouth Salmon Fishing hot now! As these three young boys enjoy a day with their dads catching fish, including a SHARK, which was the biggest hit of the day. Learning about the fish, the seals, porpoises and jut plain old bonding with their dads, I ask which is more important on this day School of fishing.
My favorite fishery of the year
Gone are the bluebird days of summer and along with them the large crowds of fishers. This fishery is for good fishers who know how and where to catch these very aggressive biting salmon. In the summer you can catch migrating salmon most any where and you may be just as lucky out in the middle with no knowledge of the underwater structure or the effect that the currents have on the movement of the fish. But to be highly successful at catching lots of Blackmouth you must understand the Bottom contours and how the tidal current flows around these sand bars and ledges. Blackmouth are aggressive opportunistic feeders and will eat when and where they find food. The small fish they like are herring or Candlefish which seek refuge out of the main current along the ledges and drop offs. So usually find the bait and you will find Blackmouth, now they may not be biting every minute of the day, but usually if you stay with the bait the Blackmouth will go on a bite and then it is “Fish on – Fish On”. Some of the more popular spots in area nine are Possession Bar, Point No Point, Double Bluff, Lip Lip off the South of Marristone Island and Mid Channel Bank to name a few. Most popular depth is around 100 to 150 feet and fishing close to bottom with Coyote Spoons in green and whites.

Blackmouth salmon legal now
|
Area 10 Opened for retention of Blackmouth Tuesday October 16, 2007
Blackmouth are available at Kingston on Jeff Head and also in Shilshole Bay. The wind has made it tough to fish, but when we have gotten out this past week is has been good fishing for Blackmouth. Best lures have been Coyote spoons in green and white trailed 36 inches behind a green glow flasher. We have been fishing in 100 to 120 feet of water and placing the lure close to bottom

Tom lands a Coho
|
Area 9
Coho and Chum salmon
We are still catching Coho off the shipwreck into browns bay and also on the possession Point buoy side just off the Can. The best lure continues to be a white squid 32 inches behind a green glow hot spot flasher. While the river water is reaching out to Area 9 and coloring the top few feet of the bay, the best dept has been from 40 to 60 feet down. Chum salmon are starting to show in the Point No Point area and this will be the time to go get some Silver Brights as they are called in the store. These early saltwater chums are in good shape and make fair barbecued fish and of course they are excellent for smoking. Chum salmon are strong fighters and can some times be caught with some degree of success.

Coho sucess

Area 9
Coho and Chum salmon
Still some very nice Coho racing in from the straits to the local rivers and the chum salmon become legal in area 9 Although Coho fishing will be spotty the next couple weeks there can be that exceptional day when all things go great and a big school of hungry mature Coho are swimming just under your boat. Shipwreck into Browns bay is a good spot or try the mid channel on a strong incoming tide.
